BEYOND LOCAL BORDERS

The Impact of Visitors on Community Growth

By Shelby Ruch

Because Goodlettsville is only 12 miles from Nashville, we’re often referred to as “Nashville’s neighbor.” You may have said it yourself that we’re “just north of Nashville.” The City of Goodlettsville even has programs and tours including our city in a tourist’s Nashville getaway. While some locals may not always be thrilled about our proximity to the big city, the benefits of being Nashville’s neighbor far outweigh any of the negatives.

Perhaps the most tangible benefit is the impact on our local economy. Tourism and visitors give Goodlettsville a significant economic boost, which then impacts residents, too. Tourism fuels local businesses, like our quaint antique shops, family-owned restaurants, charming hotels, and picturesque parks. The revenue generated from visitors partaking in these establishments fosters economic growth, keeping them in business and allowing them to grow and serve the community.

When tourists and visitors spend their hard-earned dollars here in Goodlettsville, both residents and local governments benefit. Visitor spending in both Sumner County and Davidson County reached record-breaking levels in 2022: visitor spending generated $19.79 million in state and local tax revenue in Sumner County and $1.02 billion in Davidson County. These tax dollars do have an effect on residents as well! Tourism-generated taxes save residents of Goodlettsville an average of $415 per year in Sumner County and an average of $2,318 per year in Davidson County.

But these financial savings aren’t the only benefit tourism brings to the local economy. Visitors can also bring in a fresh perspective, curiosity, and an eagerness to explore the local culture and surroundings. In Goodlettsville, the engagement of our visitors in cultural events, historical sites, and community activities helps preserve our unique heritage. As tourists attend Music on Main or Yulefest, visit the Bowen House and Mansker’s Station, or dine at Chef’s Market, they remember and may even share the extraordinary and unforgettable experiences they had right here in Goodlettsville.

The value of a visitor is so much more than the economic boost to our community – it’s also about the people we meet and the relationships we create and deepen. I’m sure many of us still remember vacations we took as children with our parents. Did you ever meet anyone in that town that left an impression? As visitors immerse themselves in the local culture, share stories with residents, and partake in community events, they become more than just observers. They become members of the extended Goodlettsville community. These connections not only enhance the overall tourist experience, but also transform a fleeting visit into a lasting and treasured connection.

Visitors also bring a fresh perspective and even an eagerness to explore and experience a new place. They bring newness when sometimes we as residents look at our town with staleness. Their reminder of the liveliness helps us look at our home with fresh eyes, too.

This helps preserve our heritage and gives us the opportunity to meet new people. These relationships can also create a cultural exchange, helping us build bridges between Goodlettsville and the wider world. As visitors experience the warmth and hospitality of Goodlettsville, they often leave with fond memories, creating a positive reputation that attracts even more travelers. Part of those warm memories include the people they met along the way.

The value of a visitor to Goodlettsville extends far beyond the economic impact. Tourism serves as a catalyst for cultural exchange and relationship building, too. As Goodlettsville continues to grow, the relationship between locals and visitors will play a vital role in shaping our future. Let’s make sure Goodlettsville remains a destination that’s renowned for our hospitality, cultural value, and warm community spirit. •
